I was talking with the guys I carpool with yesterday morning and 1979, the Smashing Pumpkins song came on. I asked them if they were fans and they gave me the “eh”. I am not a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, but I really like a lot of the stuff they do. We got to talking and I remember the first time I heard “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” Listen Here. An absolutely incredible song from the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Record. I was sitting outside my high school in my GMC Jimmy and it was snowing. The sky was that red color it gets when the snow is thick and the city lights are reflecting off of it. It was warm in my truck and I must have been waiting for someone. The song came on with the line, “…the world is a vampire” and I was hooked. It is such an angry song, it talked about some things I knew my parents would not love. It put into words what I was feeling, and at 16 years old, your “feelings” are pretty much in control unfortunately.

I love those moments though, when I can remember exactly what I was doing when I heard a song. Music is like that for me. It is so powerful.

I have never put a question on this blog before and I am a little apprehensive about it because “What if no one responds?”. Who cares though? So, I am curious, what is a moment like that for you? What is a song you remember hearing and it takes you back to an exact moment?

  1. We took a family trip to Kino Bay, Mexico when I was just getting into that middle school age. My dad had brought along his walkman with some kind of mix tape. There was NOTHING to do in a car back then so I thought I’d see what this cool technology was all about. As we crossed through the desert of this foreign land I remember marveling at the sounds and words from “Radar Love”.

That is a great driving song!
